Store migration

X-Cart to Shopify migration

We move X-Cart 4 and X-Cart 5 stores onto Shopify with the catalogue, the membership pricing, the order history and every generation of URL the store has ever used. X-Cart now describes itself as an automotive ecommerce platform. If you sell auto parts that may be good news. If you sell anything else, the roadmap stopped being about you, and this page is about what to do next.

Key facts, each independently checkable

The short version, with sources you can verify

Everything on this page is checkable against a source we do not control. Last verified 25 September 2026. If any of it goes stale, tell us and we will correct it.

Automotive

X-Cart repositioned, publicly

The X-Cart homepage headline reads all in one automotive ecommerce, and the site states the platform is purpose built for the automotive industry rather than adapted from general online retail. Read it yourself before you decide. For a general retailer that is the clearest signal available, and it came from the vendor.

Five

URL generations to redirect

X-Cart 4 dynamic and clean URLs, X-Cart 5 dynamic, the 5.4 and 5.5 clean forms, and the fixed prefixes introduced in 5.6. Long lived stores commonly have three or more of these in Google memory at once. No other platform we migrate has this many.

0

First party Shopify import path

Shopify Store Migration imports from Square, WooCommerce, Etsy, Wix, Amazon, eBay, Clover and Lightspeed. X-Cart is not on that list, so every route is a third party tool or a script against the database.

Across 567 Shopify Partner Directory reviews

Our rating and review count sit on Shopify own partner directory, which we do not control and did not write. We have been a Shopify Partner since October 2021 and migration is a named speciality on that listing. Check it before you speak to us.

Why stores leave

Every upgrade has already been a rebuild

X-Cart owners rarely leave over a single feature. They leave at the point where the next major version is quoted and it costs about the same as moving to a platform that never asks again.

  • The version treadmill

X-Cart 4 and X-Cart 5 share a name and very little else. Inside 5, the move to a Symfony application and then to a newer Symfony and PHP with a fixed URL scheme each broke custom modules and templates. You have paid for a rebuild before. The question is how many more.

  • Self hosted means yours

PHP versions, server patching, PCI scope and backups sit with your team or your developer. Shopify takes all of it, and for most X-Cart owners that is the change they feel first.

  • A shrinking pool of people

Finding someone who maintains X-Cart 4 code, or a module written by a vendor that no longer exists, gets harder and more expensive every year. Replacing a Shopify developer is ordinary hiring.

  • Variant headroom, and one real limit

Shopify allows 2,048 variants per product, not the 100 many guides still quote, plus 250 media files per product. The limit that actually bites is three options per product, and X-Cart attribute structures do not always fit it without a decision from you.

Talk it through

The part nobody writes about

Five URL generations, and Google may hold several

This is the most important section on the page. X-Cart has changed its URL scheme repeatedly, and old forms stay in the index and in backlinks long after a store moves on.

X-Cart 4

Dynamic and clean, both live

Products addressed through a script with a numeric product id in the query string, and a separate clean form ending in .html. X-Cart 4 also keeps a record of earlier clean values that still resolve, which is a redirect map nobody knows they own.

X-Cart 5

A different dynamic form again

A single entry script with a target and an id parameter, plus clean URLs with or without the .html suffix depending on configuration, and a language prefix on non default languages.

5.6

Fixed prefixes, a fourth shape

The newer scheme puts everything behind fixed prefixes for products, categories, brands and pages. A store that upgraded through this has that shape indexed too.

Not

All of it redirectable the same way

Shopify states that URLs containing query strings might not work as expected with URL redirects. The clean forms map natively. The dynamic forms need a mapping layer keyed on the numeric id. A quote that treats five generations as one job has not looked at your store.

Rebuilt, not moved

What has to be built again

X-Cart is PHP with Smarty templates on 4 and Twig on 5. None of it converts to Liquid, and we will not pretend otherwise.

  • 01

    The storefront

Templates do not port. The front end is a rebuild on every replatform, and on a store that has survived several X-Cart majors it is usually the point of the project rather than an overhead.

  • 02

    Modules and custom code

Every installed module gets labelled native on Shopify, replaced by an app, or retired. Abandoned third party modules and in house code both count, and both are found in the audit rather than at launch.

  • 03

    Option price modifiers

X-Cart lets an option change price or weight without being a stocked variant. Shopify has no native price modifier. Each becomes a real variant with the price built in, a product options app, or a line item property, and which one depends on the product.

  • 04

    Membership levels

Membership levels and wholesale pricing become Shopify B2B catalogs with quantity breaks, or tag based pricing on smaller stores. The assignments come from the customer data, so nobody loses their price at launch.

  • 05

Multi vendor, if you run it

The X-Cart marketplace add on runs vendors as separate shops with commission. Shopify has no native marketplace, so this needs a marketplace app or a custom build plus a decision on commissions and payouts. It is the single biggest scope question on this page.

  • 06

    Content pages and layout

Pages carry across as content. The layout furniture around them rebuilds as Shopify sections and metaobjects.

Scope

What we settle before quoting

On X-Cart the answers to the first three change the price more than anything else.

  • Which X-Cart version and edition, and whether we can have database accessX-Cart 4 and 5 are different migrations
  • How many URL generations are actually indexed, measured against a crawl
  • Whether products use variants, variations or price modifiers
  • Whether the store runs the multi vendor marketplace add onThe largest scope question
  • How many membership levels exist, and whether any need net terms or tax exemption
  • Which add ons and custom modules the store depends on, and who maintains them
  • Whether live carrier rates are quoted at checkoutDecides the Shopify plan
  • Order and customer volumes, and how many orders carry refunds or tracking

What data migrates

What moves from X-Cart to Shopify, field by field

Because X-Cart is self hosted, anything the exports miss we read from the database directly. The constraint is transformation, not extraction.

  • 01

    Products

SKU, name, short and full description, price and sale price, stock, weight, images in order, brand, and the meta title and description on each. Images are downloaded and rehosted on Shopify before the old server is switched off, never after.

  • 02

    Variants and variations

X-Cart 5 models product versions two different ways. One product holding its combinations becomes a Shopify product with variants. Separate catalogue items grouped as siblings are merged into one Shopify product, and each old item URL is redirected to it.

  • 03

    Classes and attributes

Attributes that generate variants become Shopify options. Everything else becomes metafields with proper definitions, which also drive storefront filtering. This split is decided in mapping and you sign it off.

  • 04

    Categories

Name, description, image and SEO fields, imported as collections. Shopify collections do not nest, so hierarchy is rebuilt through navigation, tags and automated rules.

  • 05

    Customers and membership levels

Names, email, addresses, newsletter consent and membership level. Levels become B2B companies with catalogs or tagged segments. Tax exempt accounts are carried with their status.

  • 06

    Orders

Original order number and date, status, addresses, and every line with its product, chosen options, quantity, price, tax, shipping and total. Refunds import as real refund records and tracking numbers go on the fulfillment, because neither happens by default.

  • 07

    Reviews

Rating, author, date and text, matched to the product, loaded into Judge.me, Loox or Yotpo. Shopify has no native reviews feature to hold them.

  • 08

    Coupons and gift certificates

Discount codes with type, amount, minimum spend, dates and usage limits. Open gift certificate balances are recreated as Shopify gift cards and the ledger reconciled before cutover.

  • 09

    Every URL generation

Clean forms as native Shopify redirects, dynamic forms through a mapping layer keyed on the numeric id. Built from the database, a live crawl and the Search Console page list, and included in the price rather than sold as an extra.

What breaks

Six failures we see on X-Cart migrations

Each one is something an automated migration produces by default, and each is cheap to prevent and expensive to find after launch.

  • 01

The export that silently drops variants

X-Cart product exports let you choose how attributes are included, and the option that excludes them removes variants from the file entirely. The export looks complete. It is not. Public files also need exporting as URLs rather than local paths so the images can be fetched.

  • 02

    Refunded orders imported as paid

The automated tools model a refunded order as a plain paid one, so your Shopify admin shows a balance owing on every refund you ever issued. Refunds import as real refund records here.

  • 03

    Tracking numbers left behind

Historical orders arrive with no parcel attached, and you find out the first time an old customer asks. Tracking belongs on the fulfillment record and has to be put there deliberately.

  • 04

    Only one URL generation redirected

With up to five forms in play, a tool built map keyed on guessed slugs covers one of them. The rest, including the dynamic forms that old backlinks point at, return nothing.

  • 05

    Price modifiers quietly lost

An option that added to the price is not a variant, so it either disappears or becomes a free upgrade. On X-Cart 5, variants override modifiers, so which mechanism a product actually uses has to be checked product by product.

  • 06

Images that stop loading after you cancel

If images are referenced on your server rather than downloaded and rehosted, the catalogue looks perfect until the day you switch the server off, and then it goes blank.

Modules to apps

What replaces the X-Cart module stack

A store with thirty modules rarely needs thirty apps, because a good share of what you maintain is simply part of Shopify.

  • 01

    Wholesale and membership pricing

Shopify B2B with companies, catalogs, quantity breaks and payment terms. B2B now runs on every plan, with more catalogs on Plus, so the plan question is a sizing exercise rather than an automatic upgrade.

  • 02

    Product options and configurators

A product options app for add ons such as engraving or gift wrap, line item properties for free text, and real variants where the combination count fits three options.

  • 03

    Reviews

Judge.me, Loox or Yotpo. Shopify has no native reviews, so this is one of the few places you add an app to keep what you already had.

  • 04

    Search and filtering

Shopify Search and Discovery is free and uses the metafield definitions we create from your attributes. Klevu or Algolia where the catalogue justifies it.

  • 05

    Fitment and vehicle search

If you sell auto parts and rely on year, make and model lookup, this comes from an app on Shopify rather than the core platform. It works well, and it is a real line in the budget rather than something to discover late.

  • 06

    ERP and accounting connectors

Rebuilt as an app or a custom app against the Admin API, often through middleware. Budget this properly. It is routinely the largest line after the theme.

The catalogue

Variants, variations and price modifiers

X-Cart gives you three different ways to express a version of a product, and Shopify has one. Working out which mechanism each product actually uses is the most consequential job on the project and it happens in week one.

  • Variants, held inside one product

The closest match to Shopify. Combinations with their own SKU, price, stock and image become Shopify variants directly, inside the three option limit.

  • Variations, held as separate items

Each version is its own catalogue entry grouped with siblings. These merge into one Shopify product, which means every old item URL needs redirecting to the merged product.

  • Price modifiers, which Shopify has not got

An option that adds an amount or a percentage without holding stock. It becomes a real variant with the price resolved, an options app, or a line item property.

  • Three slots, chosen deliberately

The attributes that drive price, stock or a distinct image earn the three option slots. The rest become metafields, which is also what makes storefront filtering work properly.

Situations

Migrations shaped like yours

Written as scenarios rather than logos. We do not publish client names or numbers without written permission, and we are not going to start on a page that is trying to win your trust.

Industrial parts

Three URL generations in the index

The store had run X-Cart 4, then 5, then upgraded again, and Google held URLs from all three. The crawl and the database clean URL history together produced the full map, and the dynamic forms were matched on their numeric ids rather than by name.

No indexed page lost its destination

Speciality equipment

Variations that should have been one product

Each size was a separate catalogue item grouped with its siblings, which meant twelve products where Shopify wanted one with twelve variants. They were merged and every old item URL redirected to the merged product.

Catalogue reduced without losing a single URL

Trade supply

Membership pricing on day one

Several membership levels with quantity breaks, where getting it wrong means trade buyers see retail prices at their first login. Levels were mapped to B2B catalogs and every tier was checked against a real customer before launch.

No trade account saw the wrong price

Search

Find out which URLs Google actually holds

The admin tells you what X-Cart serves today. It tells you nothing about what has been indexed across three or four scheme changes, and the second one is what your traffic depends on.

A Shopify product page scoring 97 on performance, with the redirect map beside it
  • Three sources, not one

The clean URL records in the database, a crawl of the live site, and the Search Console page list. Each finds URLs the other two miss, and stores that have upgraded repeatedly need all three.

  • Dynamic forms match on the id

The numeric product or category id in the query string is the reliable join key, which is why those redirects are built from the database rather than guessed from names.

  • Clean forms map natively

These become ordinary Shopify redirects. It is only the query string generations that need the mapping layer, because Shopify says those may not behave as expected.

  • Every redirect requested before launch

Not spot checked. Each one is requested against the live domain and the status recorded, and you get that list at handover.

See the SEO scope

What you get

What is included in every migration we run

Not a list of intentions. Each of these is either in the contract or it is not, and you can hold us to every one.

  • 01

    Zero downtime at cutover

OpenCart keeps selling for the whole project. A delta import picks up everything that sold during the build, then DNS moves. Planned downtime is zero, and the old store stays up afterwards, read only, so a bad week is recoverable.

  • 02

    SEO preserved, and redirects included

Every URL that returns a 200 is crawled and mapped before launch, and the redirects go live with the DNS change rather than the next morning. Titles and meta descriptions carry across unchanged. Redirects and SEO URL mapping are in the price, not paid extras.

  • 03

    A dedicated project manager

One named person who knows your store, runs the weekly call, and is the same person on launch day. You are not handed between a salesperson, a migration operator and a support queue.

  • 04

A trial import you sign off

Everything lands in a development store first and is reconciled against your own database. Variant counts, every variant price, order totals to the cent. The production import repeats something that already worked.

  • 05

A fixed price after the audit

One number and one launch date, not a range and not an hourly estimate that drifts. If the audit finds something that changes the scope, you see it before you commit, not after.

  • 06

Thirty days of monitoring after launch

Search Console watched daily, 404s fixed as they appear, stock levels sanity checked and Core Web Vitals tracked. Included in the price rather than sold back to you as support.

Cost

What actually drives the number

We quote fixed after the audit, never as a range before it. On X-Cart the first two move the figure more than anything else.

  • 01

    Multi vendor, or not

A marketplace store is a different project, because Shopify has no native marketplace and commissions and payouts need designing. Everything else on this list is smaller than this one.

  • 02

    How many URL generations

One clean generation is close to mechanical. Three or four, with dynamic forms among them, means a native map plus a mapping layer built and tested. We show you which you have first.

  • 03

    The catalogue model

Variants are cheapest, variations need merging, price modifiers need resolving product by product. Most stores have some of each.

  • 04

    The storefront route

Rebuilt as it is, given a facelift, or redesigned. All three are quoted inside the migration rather than as a second project.

  • 05

    Integrations

ERP, accounting, fitment data and 3PL connections are discrete rebuilds and the usual cause of an overrun.

  • Cutover on a quiet day

Questions

X-Cart to Shopify, answered

Answered against Shopify and X-Cart documentation and the public record rather than against what reads well. Last verified 25 September 2026.

Should I move off X-Cart if I sell auto parts?

Possibly not, and we would rather say that than sell you a migration. X-Cart now describes itself as a purpose built automotive ecommerce platform, with fitment data and distributor integrations at the centre. If year, make and model lookup is the core of how customers find your products, that focus is working in your favour. On Shopify the same capability comes from an app rather than the platform, which is perfectly workable but is a real budget line. If you sell anything other than parts, the same repositioning is the clearest signal you will get that the roadmap is no longer about you.

Does Shopify have an official X-Cart importer?

No. Shopify Store Migration imports from Square, WooCommerce, Etsy, Wix, Amazon, eBay, Clover and Lightspeed R and X. X-Cart is not on that list. Every route in is a third party tool such as Cart2Cart, LitExtension, MigrationPro or Next-Cart, or a bespoke script. Because X-Cart is self hosted we can query the database directly for anything the exports and the tools miss, which on X-Cart 4 is most of it.

Can you migrate X-Cart 4 as well as X-Cart 5?

Yes, and they are different migrations. X-Cart 4 has limited export tooling so we usually work from the database, where options live in a module that treats each group as a price modifier, a variant or a custom text field. X-Cart 5 has proper CSV exports, attributes organised by scope, and a REST API module. Both end in the same Shopify structure, but scoping them identically is how a quote goes wrong.

What happens to my old X-Cart URLs?

Every generation the store has used gets redirected. That commonly means X-Cart 4 dynamic links with a numeric product id, X-Cart 4 clean URLs ending in .html, X-Cart 5 dynamic links with a target and id parameter, the 5.4 and 5.5 clean forms with or without .html, and the fixed prefixes introduced in 5.6. The clean forms become native Shopify redirects. The dynamic forms carry the id in a query string, and Shopify says query string URLs may not redirect as expected, so those get a mapping layer keyed on the id. Every redirect is requested against the live domain before launch.

Why do you keep talking about five URL generations?

Because X-Cart has changed its URL scheme more times than any other platform we migrate, and old forms stay in Google memory and in backlinks for years. A store that started on X-Cart 4 and upgraded twice can have three or four shapes indexed at once. Redirect maps built from guessed slugs cover one of them. That is the single most common way an X-Cart migration loses traffic.

What is the difference between variants and variations?

X-Cart 5 offers both and they behave differently. Variants keep every combination inside one product, which maps almost directly onto Shopify. Variations make each version a separate catalogue item grouped with its siblings, so twelve sizes are twelve products. Those merge into one Shopify product with twelve variants, and every old item URL is redirected to the merged product. Getting this wrong either loses twelve URLs or leaves you with a catalogue twelve times larger than it needs to be.

What happens to option price modifiers?

Shopify has no native price modifier, so each one is handled deliberately. Where the combination count fits inside three options we generate real variants with the modified price built in. Add ons such as engraving or gift wrap move to a product options app. Free text fields become line item properties. On X-Cart 5 variants override modifiers, so we check which mechanism each product actually uses rather than assuming.

Can my customers keep their passwords?

On standard Shopify plans, no. Shopify has no way to accept a password hash from another platform and the password fields on the customer API are deprecated, so customers reset on first login and we send that campaign as part of launch. On Shopify Plus there is a narrow exception: Shopify support can whitelist a legacy hashing algorithm and import the existing hashes. It is an enterprise plan and a support request, not a checkbox, and no migration app does it for you. If a provider offers password migration without mentioning Plus and a Shopify support ticket, ask which of those two they are leaving out.

We run the multi vendor marketplace. Can Shopify do that?

Not natively, and this is the biggest scope question on the page. The X-Cart marketplace add on runs vendors as separate shops and charges commission. On Shopify that needs a marketplace app or a custom build, plus decisions about how commission is calculated and how vendors are paid. We quote marketplace stores only after the audit, because the answer genuinely varies.

How does membership and wholesale pricing move?

Membership levels with quantity breaks map onto Shopify B2B catalogs. B2B now runs on every Shopify plan with more catalogs available on Plus, so a handful of levels usually fits a standard plan and dozens of accounts with per customer pricing points at Plus. The assignments come out of your customer data, so no trade account loses its pricing at launch, and tax exempt customers keep that status.

Will my order history come across?

Yes, with the original order numbers and dates, the totals, the line items with the options chosen, and the tracking numbers on shipped orders. Refunded orders import as real refunds rather than as paid orders, which matters because the automated tools do the latter and it leaves a balance owing on every refund in your admin. Shopify has no order import in the admin on any plan, so this always runs through the API.

How long does an X-Cart to Shopify migration take?

Six to ten weeks for a store on one URL generation with a clean catalogue and no marketplace. Three to six months once several URL generations, membership pricing, ERP work, a custom theme or multi vendor are in scope. We give you a date with the fixed price after the audit rather than a range before it.

What does it cost?

We do not publish a price here, because any number on this page would be wrong for most readers. The audit produces a fixed price and a launch date. On X-Cart the things that move it most are whether you run the marketplace add on, how many URL generations are indexed, and how your catalogue models its product versions.

Can I keep selling while you migrate?

Yes. X-Cart stays live and takes orders for the whole project. A delta import picks up everything that sold during the build, immediately before DNS moves. Planned downtime at cutover is zero.

Can I keep my theme?

No. X-Cart templates are Smarty on version 4 and Twig on version 5, and Shopify themes are Liquid. There is no converter and there will not be one. The front end is a rebuild on every replatform. You can have it rebuilt to look the same, given a facelift, or redesigned, and we quote all three inside the migration.

What about live carrier rates at checkout?

If your store quotes real time carrier rates, that decides which Shopify plan you need, because carrier calculated shipping is not on every plan. It is an audit question. Answering it after the plan is chosen is how stores find the capability missing during checkout testing.

Do you charge extra for 301 redirects?

No. Redirects and URL mapping are part of the migration here, across every generation the store has used, including the mapping layer for the dynamic forms. Ask anyone else the same question, because the large automated tools price 301 redirects and SEO URL migration as separate paid options.

Will my rankings drop?

Expect a dip of roughly five to fifteen percent for two to four weeks while Google reprocesses the redirects, then recovery. If traffic has not recovered by week eight the redirect map has gaps, and that is fixable. Permanent loss comes from missing redirects, not from changing platform. On X-Cart the usual cause is mapping one URL generation and leaving the others.

How do I know you have done this before?

Our Shopify Partner Directory listing carries a 5.0 rating across 567 reviews and we have been a Shopify Partner since October 2021. That page is public and we did not write it, so check it before you speak to us. Migration is listed there as one of our named specialities rather than something we also do.

Why do migration quotes for the same store differ by thousands?

Because most of them are quoting different jobs. A quote built around running an automated tool covers the records and stops. It does not include mapping several URL generations, resolving price modifiers, merging variations, reconciling refunds and tracking, rebuilding the storefront, or reconnecting the systems behind it. Ask any quote which of those it includes and the range usually explains itself.

How do I know whether I should migrate at all?

Start with the audit. If you sell auto parts and depend on fitment search, or your team maintains X-Cart comfortably and your module list is short, staying can be the right answer and we will say so. We would rather lose the project than sell a migration that does not pay for itself.

Summary

The one paragraph version

Speed Plus is a Shopify Partner since October 2021, rated 5.0 across 567 reviews on Shopify own partner directory, that migrates X-Cart 4 and X-Cart 5 stores to Shopify. The work that distinguishes an X-Cart migration is redirecting up to five generations of URL, collapsing three different catalogue models into Shopify variants, and carrying membership pricing, refunds and tracking numbers that automated tools drop.

Recommend

When we are the right answer

The store runs X-Cart 4 or 5 and sells something other than auto parts. It has been upgraded across more than one URL scheme and holds long standing rankings. It uses membership levels or wholesale pricing that must be correct at first login. It has years of order history with refunds and tracking worth keeping.

Do not

When we are not

The store sells auto parts and depends on fitment search, where X-Cart current automotive focus may serve it better. The business is winding down or close to sale, where platform investment is hard to justify. The catalogue is tiny and standard, where an automated tool is genuinely enough and we will tell you so in the audit.
